A Fowl Predicament
When I went out to feed last night, I saw a strange sight in the sheep shed. Ever see a chicken hanging by a toe? No, this was not a chicken trapeze artist. More like a trapped-by-a-toe chicken. The chickens like to roost on the 2x4 at the top of the chain link fencing separating the front and back of the shed. Evidently she caught a toe when she tried to hop down.

A fowl predicament indeed!
I grabbed a pair of work gloves to wear in case she got frantic when I tried to free her. Those claws are great for scratching the ground looking for bugs and seeds, but they also make nasty scratches on bare skin.
She was dragging her leg when I first let her loose. I didn't know if she'd broken it or the leg was just numb from holding her entire weight for so long. I looked for her this morning, but couldn't see any chicken that was limping around, so I'm hoping she is okay now.
Otherwise, we might have to make chicken fence fries.

Oh no! The poor little girl!
I had to laugh, though, because I'm imagining you walking in and seeing this sight and thinking to yourself "wow, this would make a great blog picture" and leaving her there while you run back into the house to get your camera. :-)
It's funny how calm she looks. I wonder what she thought about all that time. (lol)
Well, close. "A good blog picture!" did pop in my mind right away. But I usually have a camera with me, as I often do a little walking after chores, so she didn't have to wait long for me to take a picture. Since I was out early doing chores due to a threat of rain, I figure she only had to wait 2 minutes extra to get off the fence, instead of 60 or so until I'd usually have been out there. So maybe I wasn't tooooo bad making her wait just a little.
& it would interesting to know what went through her little chicken mind while she was just hanging around. ;-)
I'm trying NOT to laugh here, but gosh, it's so hard. I think it's ok to laugh, though, because she's ok. whew!
Something like this happened to my large Ameracauna hen, too. But she got her toe stuck under the coop gate. All the other chickens had already went into the coop for the night, but when I checked on them the last time, she was still there beside the gate.
I'm just glad that I decided to go out before I went upstairs to bed, because the poor thing would have been stuck there the entire cold, windy and icy night!
And I also wanted to say that there's no need to explain the photo taking opportunities.
I don't go anywhere now without my camera, either. Walking around my land, I always find something photo worthy and interesting.
I've learned the hard way that it stinks to have forgotten the camera when a special photo op appears.
I take hundreds of photos every day. Most get deleted.
Thank goodness for digital, eh?
Exactamundo! Almost every time I go somewhere without my camera, there's this great photo op, and I MISS it, then I'm mad at myself for not thinking to have my camera. So I carry one almost everywhere, and yes, I do a LOT of deleting. I figure if there's one or two good ones each time, you've done well, and hooray for digital!!!
