First Chick Of 2009

in Farm Critters

We’ve had a couple of hens nesting Ying/Yang style in one of the feed troughs out in the sheep shed.

Two hens sitting on nest.
How do you like this “feed trough”?  The Farmer made it from the headboard of an old twin bed.

Usually it’s the guineas who pair up to nest.  I guess these young hens decided it was a good idea and followed their example.

Yesterday evening I got a nice surprise.  The first little chick for 2009 was following around the Buff Orpington hen.

This morning when I went out to do chores, I saw the hen sitting in the llama’s pen.

I’ll confess I couldn’t resist getting close enough to the hen so she’d move. And MOVE they did… so fast, I could hardly get a picture!

Since the white hen is still sitting on the nest, and Peepers is under the workshed on a nest, there are bound to be more little chicks!

I love those little fluffballs!

Thanks! I think little chicks are such fun to watch zipping along after their mamas!
