Greenhouse Structures Book

My latest reading... Greenhouse Structures

Lots of people who live on farms have or wish for a greenhouse.  And lots of people who love plants would like one in their backyard.  Just about anyone crazy about flowering and foliage plants or who would like to grow more of their own food can use a greenhouse.

I’ve dreamed of having my own greenhouse for years!  I guess that’s why I was drawn to the book, “Greenhouse Structures: How to Get the Hobby Greenhouse of Your Dreams.”  It would be such fun to have one, but I don’t know whether I’d fill it with flowering plants or food plants… probably a mix.  I’d just like to have one sitting on the farm somewhere!

Anyway, this book talks about more kinds of greenhouses than I even knew existed.  Of course, I’ve probably seen a lot of the different structures, but didn’t know the name of what I was looking at.  I mean, there are just so many types!  Like the following:

  • Lean-To
  • Ridge/Furrow
  • Gothic Arch
  • Arch, gutter connected
  • Solar
  • Mini Greenhouse
  • Portable ones…..

The list just goes on and on!

And then there’s the idea of putting hydroponics or aquaponics in your greenhouse.  Now we’re really getting cool!  The whole system of using a tank of water with fish in it to provide a medium to grow plants is just about perfect to my way of thinking.  Okay, there is probably one flaw in the system for me, since I’m not overly keen on eating fish.  Mine would just have to die of old age and get fed to the cat or chickens or something, ha!

But still, a greenhouse for a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture sounds really neat.  I’d have trouble deciding just what all I wanted to grow!

Trouble is… you have to pay for one!

I really liked the chapter with information about estimating the costs for a DIY greenhouse, and the different options of how to go about the construction.  In my younger days, I would have opted for the “Hybrid Option”, but nowadays I think I’d need someone to build the entire greenhouse for me.

Of course, there are all different kinds and sizes of greenhouse to pick from!

Greenhouse Structures has information on choosing the best greenhouse for your needs, types of plastic for greenhouses, lighting, heating, and so on.  It covers all the bases from figuring out what you need, the types of greenhouses and what design you like best, how to figure out the cost, and what accessories you might need.  There’s even a chapter on the pros and cons of buying a used greenhouse!

If you’re interested in greenhouses and think you might like to get one someday, I recommend Greenhouse Structures: How to Get the Hobby Greenhouse of Your Dreams as a good read.  It’s available as a paperback, for Kindle, and I see it is even available for a Nook ereader!  (Just click on the one that interests you and go right to where they have the book for sale.)

Oh, and there is a Greenhouse Structures website too!

So take your pick, enjoy a good read and dream of greenhouses!  (I can see mine...  it's filled with bromeliads!!!  And fish and tomato plants!  And!!!)
