Guinea Gangsters

in Farm Critters

I looked out in the pasture a while ago, and saw two guineas running round and round the pasture. This is nothing new; they do it all the time. One chases the other, trying to prove dominance I suppose.

Then I remembered I'd taken a short video of their crazy antics back in the spring. I was sitting at the table eating breakfast, and watched those goofballs chase around the pasture for a half hour or more.

Guineas can be awfully mean to each other and any other fowl on the farm. Good thing they have redeeming qualities like being great "watchdogs", and the best critters for cutting down the tick population.

Here's one of the guineas keeping watch from the top of The Farmer's work shed.

Without such redeeming qualities, I doubt if many people would put up with the Guinea Gangsters.

Ha, ha, ha…that's hilarious! It looks like you sped the movie up, they're running so fast and cartoony. :-) :-) The other animals are in a daze from those zooming critters!

I love it too RW! I can't wait for my guineas to get big! They are doing great and have little feathers coming out on their little wings!

TWo things immediately come to mind.
1. You could never dream in a million years of catching one. I had no idea they could run so fast!
2. Your sheep couldn't care less. I guess they are used to it by now.

They always remind me of the roadrunner cartoons I used to watch when I was a kid, just zipping around all over the place.

The only way to catch them is in a pen, hopefully after they go to roost at night.

& you're absolutely right ceecee, my sheep couldn't care less. They ignore them, even if they run right over top of them!

I guess the sheep don't consider the guineas a reliable source of "Somethings coming, somethings coming, run, run!" Many prey animals can make prey animals from another species run, just by running themselves.

Is that bit of color on top of their heads hard, soft or just feathers? It looks almost prehistoric.

ceecee, the sheep have probably figured out if they ran every time the guineas were running, they'd never get any rest. Now if the dog barks and moves them, that's a different story. They pay attention to the LGD.

The colored part on top of their head is like the comb on chickens, only a little more rigid.

Amy, glad you enjoyed the video!

OH MY GOSH!! I am so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I clicked play. It would have been sprayed from my nose all over the keyboard!

I was laughing so hard…not the first time around, not the second go round, but by the third time I coulnd't help myself…and then it was like 'the song that never ends, and goes on an on my friend…."
Too dang funny!

Thanks for adding such a bright spot in my day.

They are funny to watch. Glad you enjoyed the video, but please don't hold me responsible for any damage to liquid damaged keyboards! ;-)
