Wondering why I'm talking about Halloween in September? And although Halloween and ghosts go together all right, what do cowgirls have to do with it all?
Well, to start with, this particular Halloween scenario took place in August. You see, a set of Ellie's great-grandparents stay at a campground during the summer. It closes before Halloween, so somewhere along the line they got the idea of having a "Trick or Treat" at the campground in August. Fun, huh?
So all the kids (and I suspect a lot of grandkids) get to come and be in a little parade, and get lots of candy in August.
Ellie went this year as a cowgirl. She has a cute little outfit, and I took a bunch of pictures of her in it earlier this year to use for her 2010 calendar.
Doesn't she look cute??? (I know, I'm biased, but come on! I'd think she was cute even if she wasn't MY granddaughter!)
Here's one of my favorite shots from Ellie's modeling sessions as a cowgirl. . .
As for ghosts at Halloween, all perfectly natural, but have you ever seen a 3-D ghost CAKE?
Is that not AWESOME!?????
Ellie's daddy (who also happens to be my son, ha, ha!), made this cake for the festivities. He's been making her some super birthday cakes, but this was the first time he tried using fondant. I am impressed!
He used a 3-D panda bear cake pan as the base for his ghost. Who knew when I bought that cake pan to use for his first birthday that it would still be in use over 30 years later, and he'd be the one making cakes with it?
I love traditions. And it looks like one of the traditions in our family is to have some fun cakes!

Oh!! I loved this post…first of all, I always love the ones that include beautiful Ellie, but the fact that your son not only makes extremely creative cakes (which I also *love* to do) but also uses the pans that you once used for him is wonderfully touching. I love traditions like this.
I really see Ellie in that baby picture of your son!
I’m glad you liked it! Family traditions can be a lot of fun. When it became apparent my son was really getting into decorating cakes, I started passing on some of the stuff I’ve been collecting over the years. It’s taking a while since they live in Canada, and it’s hard to stuff such bulky pans in a suitcase!
This is just awesome. I love that you have the old family picture, too. DId your son bake and decorate cakes beside you when he was little, too? Did you know that he had such an interest and talent? I’m impressed! And Ellie would be cute wearing a burlap sack, my friend. She’s got the sweetest smile…makes me want to smile, too.

Hey Lisa!
Glad you liked the pics. The boys helped in the kitchen when they were younger, especially when I was baking. He didn’t really help decorate cakes though, so I had no idea this interest would blossom. I think what motivated him to start with was the idea that he wanted Ellie to have neat cakes for her birthday like he did when he was a kid, and then I think his interest has just continued to grow. He watches Cake Boss and stuff, getting new ideas!
Great pics! Will they be in this year’s calendar?
Love the cakes–both of them. Looks like your son takes after you in the creativity department.
Oh yes, one of the cowgirl pictures will be in this year’s calendar. I just have to choose which one! =:-O
Thanks for the compliments on the cakes. I do believe I have been surpassed in the creativity department however, by both you and my son. I never tried using fondant on cakes, and both you guys have made some pretty awesome cakes with that!
I found you doing a search for ghost cakes on google. Your son’s cake is so cute. ALMOST as cute as your little Ellie
Thanks for sharing. I think I’ll try out this idea for my daughter’s 2nd birthday this month!
