Heap Of Chickens

in Farm Critters

The young chickens seem to congregrate together, while the older ones go off and do their own thing.

Here's a bunch of our younger crew I caught in a heap on top of a lumber pile. They're a mix of Buff Orpington, Polish Silver Laced, and Sicilian Buttercup.  It always amazes me we ended up with so many white chickens in this generation, when none of the foundation flock was white.

A real motley crew!

Great picture. Buff Orps are my favorites for personality, but love the hats on the Polish too.

I like the Tina Turners and Phyllis Dillers of the chicken world too! But the Buff Orps are just sooooo sweet and easy going, and great mothers. If I ever buy chicks again, I’d likely buy them. They also lay nice brown eggs!

Nice gang! They look like they’re looking for trouble. But you know chickens!

Hi there, I have a lovely bunch of new chicks, 3 mths old. I dont know the breeds, but the dad is a lovely orange rooster, and mum is a lovely plain light brown. We have ended up with one that looks like her, but 3 with the little 80’s haid do, like the one in you picture on the crossbar at the front. How???, and do you know what these breed is. Is it possible to get 2 different types from one mum and 1 – or possibly 2 dads? The other dad (the boys are brothers) is the same lovely orange, but has that squashed comb that looks like a growth on his head. I would appreciate any answers from you
kind regards, Jane

Hi Jane!

Everyone of the chicks from a hatching can look different. Then hen lays one egg at a time… which can be fertilized by any rooster in the flock. so yes, they can all be different.

The punky hair-do sounds like a Polish chicken… they have the wild looking feather hairdo. There may be others, but that’s the one I’m familiar with.

If your hen or roosters were mixed breeds to start with, then there’s no telling what might pop up in the chicks! We get some mighty strange combos around here, and we just started with Buff Orpingtons, Sicilian buttercup, and Polish Silver Laced “purebreds”… and yet we have WHITE roosters a lot of the time, which none of those breeds are. and just all sorts of combinations. It’s rather fascinating really!

Enjoy your chicks!

Thankyou, Yes it is fun to see what comes out. Our little top-knot hairdo’s are a little more refined I think than the wildness of the polish, but theyre still young.
I watch our Chickens out the window, and sometimes comment to my son about how this rooster isnt alowed to eat with those ones etc, and the other day he said ” thats your soap opera mum” ! Now just have to find homes for the 3 gorgeous rooster boys who are now starting to try and crow – gorgeous and funny.
