New Faces On The Farm

in Farm Critters

We got back late Tuesday night from our trip to Canada.  I'm trying to catch up on things here at home now, but not doing a very good job at it.  I've got a bunch of pictures to sort through, and I do mean a BUNCH.  Richard and I were both taking pictures, and there's about 900 of them sitting in a couple of files, waiting my attention.  Aye yi yi!

Yesterday morning when I went out to do chores, I noticed some new faces.  Little chick faces.  Peepers has a new chick (what's with only ONE chick these days?), and another hen has SEVEN new chicks (that's more like it!).

I took out my camera when I went to do chores this morning to get some baby pics.  Peepers brought her little chick out from under the sheds where she nests.

Peepers and her chick.

It doesn't take little chicks long to imitate their mama and try pecking at grain.

The other mama is a Buff Orpington hen:

The hen on the right is a Sicilian Buttercup, but she doesn't have any chicks.

I love to watch mama hens with their chicks.  They are soooooo uber protective.  They fluff out their feathers to make themselves look really big and tough.

Once all the chickens have munched up all the scratch grain I've thrown out for the morning, Mama Hen takes her chicks out into the pastures to forage for more food.

They'll come back in when I go out in the evening, cause my chickens just love me sooooooo much they always come running when they see me.

Okay, okay, so it's just cupboard love.  But I still enjoy seeing them come flocking towards me!

Oh, Peepers is so pretty! What an unusual coloring (unusual compared to what I look at every day in my yard!).
And that shot of protective mama made me laugh. Great picture!
Good luck sorting through all those photos…I’m the exact same way. Waaaay too many. I need to get much better at going through and deleting the less-than-stellar ones!

Thanks Christine! I love taking pics of little babies. I like your avatar pic too!

Hey Farmgirl D! I think Peepers is pretty too. She is a cross of Sicilian Buttercup, Buff Orpington rooster, and Polish Silver Laced. Got the Sicilian Buttercup comb, more of the Polish colors, but diluted. Interesting mix!

Glad you enjoyed the pics! & good luck with your Germany photos and all!

Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do over here since I’ve been MIA. You were in Canada??!
Mama hens are so interesting. I hope one of mine will become one in the next year.

Yep, we were in Canada to visit my oldest son, his wife and our 4-year old granddaughter. (See previous post, “We Made It To Manitoba”)

Love the new family members! I love the way hens mother their chicks. So attentive.

Mama hens sure do know how to take care of their little ones, that’s for sure. I’ve seen them try to chase our llamas if they think they’re too close. Now THAT’s funny!
