Water Bowl Surprise

January 12, 2010

in Life on the Farm

I never know what I’m going to find when I turn over one of the heated water bowls to dump out the old water.

Heated water bowl in roosters pen.

Back in October, it was a slug with eggs.  This morning, it was a Earthworm Spa.

Earthworms that were hiding under heated water bowl.

Nice and warm, slightly moist… just the right kind of beauty treatment for earthworms!

Maybe I should start a worm farm!

P.S. If your heated water bowls are cleaner than mine, I don’t want to hear about it.  The roosters stand in this bowl frequently, and only a toilet bowl brush will scrub off all the grime.  And it’s too cold right now to play in water!  Besides, the water still looks pretty clean, even if the bowl doesn’t.

Heated water bowl with clean water.

Right now the priority is clean water, not clean bowls.

So funny, I remember the slug with eggs!

You’re so funny. :) My chicken water gets dumped about every day, but only scrubbed out good—maybe once a week in the summer.

I hear ya. I dump out the sludge every other day or two in the winter and sometimes wipe it down with my hand, but no scrubbing. It’s too cold and no algae is growing anyway.
Unique little earthworm surprise! Did the chickens enjoy them?

There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to scrub water bowls.

Ceecee, why don’t you send your dogs my way and we’ll see if they’d lick them clean. ;-)
